Tree Nursery

Work is underway to create a tree nursery for 350 saplings!

The Ward Acres Conservancy, in partnership with the City of New Rochelle, is launching a new tree nursery just east of the Community Garden. This initiative represents an important step in supporting the long-term health and resilience of New Rochelle’s urban forest.

Rooted in both the City’s Community Forest Management Plan and the Ward Acres Master Plan, the nursery will grow young trees and shrubs that will eventually be planted throughout our parks and neighborhoods. By cultivating trees locally, we can strengthen our tree canopy, expand native species, and reduce long-term costs, while building a more sustainable, climate-resilient community.

What to Expect

Over the coming weeks, visitors may notice activity in this area as the site is prepared.

Work will include:

• Selective removal of invasive plant species •

• Installation of deer fencing •

• Soil preparation to support healthy growth •

This spring, volunteers will plant a variety of native saplings (approximately 1–4 feet tall) including shagbark hickory, American hornbeam, swamp white oak, sycamore, red oak, flowering dogwood, red osier dogwood, and winterberry.

Ongoing care, including watering, maintenance, and monitoring, will be supported by Conservancy volunteers.

This is a long-term investment in the park and our community, and we’re excited to see it take root.
